A.M.C.A is the name of a band (As far as I know there isn't an Adam) that
started out on Acid Jazz reords in '88. I saw them perform once at The Wag
in Soho (London) in '88. They keyboard (I think they were a Hammond and a
Rhodes), player was awesome, really held the band together, the lead singer
had a large voice to make up for what she lacked in height (she couldn't
have been more than 4 foot tall). Their first 12" was called "Before you
know it" (I think- most of my vinyl is a ten hour plane ride away) which is
a strong A-J track, but for me the killer is the B-side's "A.P.B." an
English 80's version of American 70's car chase music (complete with the
mandatory police sirens)!*
They released a few 12s on Acid Jazz records, (Check the Acid Jazz WWW site
for discography) one release of note is "Earthly Powers" which was big in
the Jazz dance clubs of the time, but the B-side, "Techno Powers" is a sweet
example of 'housed up' A-J. This track is now in-demand and was a regular
spinner for many of London's underground house D.J.s last summer. "Techno
Powers" marked a change in A.M.C.A.'s style. They left A.J. records and
joined a more house orientated stable (Italia?). They gained chart
success(?) in the U.K with "Barefoot in the Hay" which was released around
91-92. I believe there was an L.P. that this 12 came from, but doubt there's
much A-J content.
I reckon most of their stuff is worth tracking down. Happy hunting...

*My favourite theme tune has to be "Theme from S.W.A.T" by The
T.H.P.Orchestra. Anyone that listens to Westwood in London (What's up with
him going to Radio 1? Is he keeping it real?) will recognise the break from
this d-o-p-e track.
