New Purchases

Here's my thoughts on a couple of new purchases. Some of them are old
releases, but I thought I'd mention them anyways. And before you tell me I'm
an idiot for not enjoying something remember, tastes vary and I'm just
sharing mine.

DJ Food: "Dub Plate of Food" - Five songs on two 10" records. Fungle Junk,
Spiral Dub, Quicke Cuts the Cheese, Akaire and Blim. Released by Ninja Tunes.
If you like "a recipe for disaster" you'll love this. My favorite is Spiral
Dub.

DJ Solo & DJ Aura: Excursions 12" from MoWax - Three songs: Take Heed, Summer
Madness and Wreckin Shit. I think this sounds like a mix of Jungle and
Hi-NRG, an odd mix but very enjoyable.

DJ Cam: "Underground Vibes" from Street Jazz Records - I bought this on
impulse, having never heard of him. It's turned into one of my current
favorites. I recommend it very highly.

DJ Krush: "Meiso" from MoWax - This has been available as an import from
Japan (on Sony Records no less) for six or seven months. MoWax release has
the same songs, just a different package. Great album through. "Only the
Stong Survive" with c.l. smooth and "Duality" with DJ Shadow may rank as two
of DJ Krush's best. I was expecting some extra-tracks from MoWax though. I
guess this is the first time I'd recommend a major label over an indie.

Smith & Mighty: "Bass is Maternal" from More Rockers - Great music. "'nuf
said".

Goldie: "Timeless" on FFRR - I've listened to it four times, and I can't find
anything good to say about it. I can't even say it's way ahead of its time,
I don't hear anything new in any of the songs. Once more through and then it
goes in the "sell" pile.

Nutley Brass: "Ramones Songbook" 7" fromVital Music Records - Incredible!
Four Ramones songs done in a Herb Alpert style. Songs are Chinese Rock,
Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment, Beat on the Brat and Havana Affair. A must
hear. The address is PO Box 20247, New York City, NY 10021-0064. (No, I
don't work for them.)

Lee Perry and the Mighty Upsetters: "Kung Fu Meets the Dragon" circa 1975
rereleased on CD by Lagoon - Sounds like Lee Perry's tribute to Bruce Lee.
Best tunes include "Theme from Hong Kong" and "Black Belt". I'm not joking,
it's really a great record. The belching in the middle of the songs is a
nice touch. Features Augustus Pablo.

Justin Warfield: "My Field Trip to Planet 9" - First heared him with Bomb the
Bass and on the Rebirth of Cool 4 compilation. It took several months to
find, but it was worth it. Great jazzy/hip hop mix. Produced by Prince Paul
and Quincy Jones.

Well, that's my list. Where's yours.
