The song you are after is 'Jazz Thing' by Gangstarr from 1990. It is on
the soundtrack of Spike Lee's 'Mo Better Blues'. Your right, this is a
fantastic song, ahead of it's time, and it still remains one of my
alltime fav gangstarr tunes. The 12' has 2 mixes (my fav being the movie
mix). the 12' also features a very different instrumental version which
goes for 7:28 and is incredible. This mix is truly a hip hop meets jazz
track in all sense of the meaning, and i'm sure it influenced many acid jazz
groups of today.
interestingly enough, Gangstarr's first album 'No more Mr nice guy'
features a track called 'Jazz Music' which shares the same break as the
'jazz thing' instrumental. So in effect, 'Jazz thing' is more or less a
part 2 version of 'Jazz Music'
