more funky stuff

There was some talk a while ago about 'Always There'. I was lucky to find
Ronnie Laws LP 'Pressure Sensitive(?)' on vinyl last week. Somebody said the
original of 'Always There' was done by Side Effect but, what is interesting is
that this record has Ronnie Laws and someone else credited as the authors, but
one of the other tracks has Side Effect credited with the background vocals...
hmmm... is there a connection? Just something interesting.

I also found two Flora Purim albums. One with a bird flying on the front
(can't remember the name) has a track called 'Andrei (I walked)' This is
super crazy Brazilian sound with totally demented Brazilian scat(?). Also the
title track (I can't remember the name of this either) has the cool bass sample
used in DJFood's Dark Lady. (Just for interest's sake).

I also found R.A.M.P.'s album with 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine'. These guys
were pretty good under Roy's direction but don't do justice to some of the
stuff. It's a little flat compared with his Ubiquity versions.

Also got Betty Davis's 'Nasty Gal' album. What was all the hype about on this
list. I think it REALLY sucks. It sounds like she put out the album just to
spite Miles. If anyone wants to make a trade for something new or used on
vinyl I'd be more than happy. This record is in pretty good shape. I won't say
mint because I can't remember.

On the topic of the E-Z listening stuff. I know a few people who are totally
into it. I've never really had the time to find out the true greats but,
here's what I know.
Esquivel- very cool latin sounds
Dick Hyman- never heard him but was supposed to be the master
Martin Denny- just picked up an old 'best of...' Weirdo hawaiian experimental
abstractions.?
Sergio Mendes- I get the idea he was a dentist's office regular. I REALLY like
him and for the AJ folks, it's nice easy to find, cheap Brazilian stuff that
rivals Mondo Grosso's 'Tree, Air Rain...'
Ray Coniff-Has done his share of crazy stuff. Sort of mod sounding vocals is
what I like
James Bond Themes- AHA now we get to stuff closer to acid jazz with a sound
similar to Lalo Shifrin's Mission Impossible. I have a cover record done by
Ray Martin and his Orchestra of James Bond themes and it is very cool, very
spacey, real chase scene material or just exciting climactic kind of sound

Another find in the cheap bin is Lalo Shifrin's Blak Widow LP. Anybody heard
it. It's got the funkiest 'Theme from Jaws' ever. I don't know if this is the
original. I'd be amazed if it was. The whole record is cool as well.

That bastard selling his nutritional bullshit.... I got eleven copies of it!

Does anyone know any Nancy Wilson. I have 'Sunshine' on Capitol Rare comp.
but I just came across five old records and wonder what they are like. All
originals, all on Capitol. They all say '... performs the music of.... or
...sings grammy award winners...' or something like that. A bit of a turn off
but not always the end.

Doin' It
