Newz from Seattle [long]

Well, it's been a while since I've contributed much. Chalk it up to a
combination of a heavy workload and some sort of "loss of faith" I went
through for a period - I found myself listening to music that in net terms
falls more under IDM than anything else, I guess. But since I'm too scared
to join the clogged IDM list, I just muted for a couple months. Even missed
posting a top of 1995 list :( I think it was probably the perpetual "is
this acid jazz?" discussions that got me thinking: do y'all really want to
hear about my latest gatherings if they're not really in the rare groove
style? This is just opinion, of course, but most of the Mother
Earth/Corduory/etc discussions that pass thru the list don't really hit me -
I'll take Coldcut over JTQ any day. There's _gotta_ be an interest for 120+
speed jazzy tracks, since that's what the clubs are usually talking about
when they advertise their "acid jazz" nights ;)

Ah, the wonderful inclusiveness of acid jazz. Does it have to be jazzy? Or
is it okay to use it meaning tr*ph*p? Don't answer, that was rhetorical and
we don't want to get into it again :) In any case, what woke me from my
snooze was a couple of albums I've picked up which seemed to fall neatly
into both categories - obviously jazzy, but uptempo and beat/sample heavy
enough to fall under under that _other_ label. Nothing incredibly hard to
find, since I haven't had much time lately, and they're mostly compilations.
I like comp's for the same reason Bambi mentioned that he doesn't like
'em... they give me a chance to catch the best-of's with minimal work
digging thru the bins!

I've been really impressed by New Breed's latest offerings, including the
BMF-mixed NB sampler volume 3. And I finally got my hands on Fila Brazillia
in two forms: "Maim That Tune", their full-length, and the new Pork Records
compilation "Abstract Vibes" on Island. That comp also has Tosca's
"Chocolate Elvis" which has _finally_ begun popping up on collection after
collection. My pick of the litter, though, was "The Darker Side of Jazz", a
City of Angels rerelease of the best of the Mephisto label releases. At
least two tracks should be familiar to listmembers! Because of Moonshine's
wide-spread distribution (they distribute CofA) you can finally walk into
your local Towering Record Store and pick up tracks by Pimp Daddy Nash and
QBurn's Abstract Message :) Congrats, Michael. BTW - keep an ear out for
the hidden track 13 - is this a new track or just a wack remix of Black
Dahlia? Hard to tell.

So, on to Seattle:

The Seattle AJ underground is still in motion, despite the loss of Spice on
Sundays a month or so back. Moe's hasn't given up on us clubbers, though.
Mo' Funk (Mondays) with DJ Riz and his assorted minions was becoming more
popular even as Spice was declining, and now, it's the place to be... but
you have to remember, of course, that the Seattle clubbing population is
small enough that our "large Monday crowd" would get a laugh from you folks
in NY, LA, Chicago, or SanFran ;). And if the hits of the 70's aren't
enough for ya, they're trying something wacky with "Shaken Not Stirred",
setting up a 50's and 60's cocktail lounge atmosphere every Thursday with DJ
Terrence Gunn at the helm. D'ya suppose the popular Portishead sit-down
show in early '95 had anything to do with this? Anyway, even though this is
only marginally related to AJ, it's different enough to be worth mentioning.
Besides, check it out and there's a good chance you'll catch a couple of
familiar licks and samples!

Brian Lyons has continued to draw major DJ talent to Strong (Crocodile Cafe,
wednesday), and continued to outperform them on his home territory; he's
consistently playing the better sets according to anyone I've asked. This
says a lot when he's up on deck with, among others, Nasir, Masa, and even
the venerable Donald Glaude (who sits in scratching on nights when he's not
in control of the tables). The live accompaniment on the dance floor is
excellent, and lemme tell you for "real" instruments you can't do much
better than to hang around near the bar and catch the lounge entertainment.
In January the outside entertainment has seriously rivaled the DJing inside
- so much so, in fact, that it's causing some attendance problems on the
dancefloor. If they can't draw people into the pay-fer-play area, they'll
have to rework the lounge idea - perhaps temporarily eliminate 'til the
summer crowd appears again. So to all you Seattleites who might be reading
this, pay yer five bucks and drop into the main floor - it's well worth it,
you cheapskate. Seriously, the #1 night to check out IMHO. Next month's
lineup is still up in the air, I'm sure Brian'll let us know as it
solidifies. BTW, someone on the list mentioned that they performed in the
lounge at the beginning of January: I don't know which one ya were, but the
gigs were outstanding!

Riz and Eugene have been hosting a Friday AJ/hip-hop night for several years
now at the Re-Bar. It started out well, drawing crowds from all around
Seattle, but the last few times I've been there on a Friday it's been pretty
beat. The huge draw originally resulted in an eclectic mix of styles -
people wearing anything from drag to college sweatshirts. Now, it's
starting to look like the folks from the Romper Room have moved to Howell St
and taken over. Of course, these things happen, it's expected with a
several-year-old show. Luckily, the new Sunday night called "Medecine"
looks like it could revitalize the ReBar's AJ standing, especially since
Spice ain't around to compete. It's all being assembled under the command
of Brian Lyons and has one of the most promising vibes I've encountered -
it's been mentioned to me as a rising star of club life by at least four or
five different sets of friends. Again, since Brian's on the list he can
probably tell ya more.

Word on Electrolush (Showbox, fridays) is equally good - I've only been
there off and on, but this place is always packed. That's how it should be;
as a converted comedy club it has a huge dancefloor area. Inside you'll get
a heavy dose of progressive house and the like. But outside the main dance
floor, the lazy beats rule and trip/acid jazz/funk is the style. The best
double-dose of musical tastes since Lemon Twist. A rotating set of DJs
keeps the sounds fresh; my favorites so far have been Sol on the inside, and
(of course) Nasir on the outside. Also, it's one of the few consistent
after-hours clubs, so stick around until 4am. At 2am they take away the
drinks and let the kiddies in (it becomes 18+) and even shut down the main
floor, but the chill room remains, with its relaxed AJ/abstract sounds. A
previous late-night failure, Harmony, at the King Theater, was the closest
thing we've had here that resembles an after-hours AJ scene, and it was
18+/no-alcohol even before 2am, so I guess we should be grateful!

Random nights I can't say much about 'cuz I haven't been there at all: The
Abyss (underground at the Fenix on Sundays). Spank! (Tuesdays at Moe). The
Art Bar has been advertising heavily for what seems to be a full week of DJ
nights - Hebegebe, BBoy Kamikaze, etc. I go to the Art Bar occasionally but
haven't gotten any feel for which nights are good yet...

As far as live shows go, we're not exactly blessed with a full schedule.
Sharkskin has been playing the area occasionally, although by far the
strangest I've heard of is their appearance at the opening of a new
apartment complex in the "hip" part of town. Or was it just Nasir? I
didn't head down for fear that I might be seduced into renting ;) Upcoming
shows I've noticed: Sharkskin has an upcoming Moe performance with Weapon
of Choice on Thursday 2/8, and TJ Kirk will be playing the Backstage on
Sunday 2/4.

God I hope this message makes it out before they take my mail service down
for a weekend upgrade - damn, it didn't. I guess you can disregard the TJ
Kirk news!

Steve

PS - Seattle jazzheads who know more about what's going on, drop me some
mail! I'm always curious to hear about the happenins

Act now and I'll send you my big and juicey 525K email catalog with Bonus
