Courtney Pine

Thankfully the dj as musician thread is over (for another three months until
some more folks sign up and aspire to impose their musical tastes on the
rest of the world) but I thought that the new Courtney Pine album might
serve as a lesson for all of you players who still won't give us respect.
"Modern Day Jazz Stories" (Verve/Polygram in NA) has Eddie
Henderson, Geri Allen, Cassandra Wilson, of course Mr. Pine and, what's
this, World DMC champ DJ Pogo (bad name, I agree). All the tracks were
rehearsed, done in two takes with live scratching on all but a few tracks
and then reassembled on samplers by Courtney Pine. The result is somewhere
in between Ornette Coleman and DJ Premier. It is NOT Dancefloor, but it also
does not suffer from the Major Label 'concept' disease that unfortunately
afflicted Mr. Marsalis in the Buckshot project. Give it a listen if you can.
The shit is fat.
Also, thanks to all of you who've supported Mo Funk Records over the
past year. Fresh Jazz Vibes is the best selling independent soul/jazz
compilation in Canada and we are releasing three new albums later this
Winter. Keep it locked.
