The first time I even heard the term "hip-hop" was from
Naughty-by-Nature's "Hip-hop Hurray". Am I correct in assuming the term
is quite new, relatively speaking?

as far as I know, the term hip hop began some time around 81-82
around the time when all the old school classics came out from
the likes of Boogie Down Productions (when Scott LaRock was still
in effect), MC Shan & Marley Marl, DJ Cool Herc, Juice Crew All Stars, etc.
