Sabres of Paradise

"This will most certainly make me look somewhat stupid, but I'll ask
anyway. So what is this Sabres of Paradise group? I've understood they
are somehow famous the way say Kraftwerk is famous. All I've heard of
their music is some little bits from "Haunted Dancehall" (or sumpthin')
which was under Acid Jazz / Trip Hop label in my local record store."

See, I knew something good would come out of this 'Tech-no more'
arguement.

The Sabres, who are alas no more (except for the occasional ltd release)
were Andy Weatherall (who first came to prominance for his production
work on Primal Screams 'Screamadelica' lp) Jaz Kooner (poor spelling I
know, who is now in 'The Aloof' I think) and..... no mind has gone blank
oh well someone can fill in the bank there.

Difficult to describe their sound. The first lp release, which was
really a collection of singles and fillers 'Sabresonic' is really in
the trad 'Techno' mould, a lil' low beat which is ok by me, but
expressed Weatheralls desire to produce 'epics' both in terms of their
duration and their sound. There is also a second later complilation of
stuff from this period 'Sabresonic II' which has many of tracks in
common with the first release, but also includes the imfamous David
Holmes mix of 'Smokebelch II' complete with samba section, bells,
whistles.... something of a legend.

The second, and really ONLY proper lp was 'Haunted Dancehall', which
sits more in the box called ecletic. There is certainly alot of dub
in there, echo chambers et al, big twanging guitar chords and the really
strange viz the single 'Wilmot' if anybody has heard it.... I wouldn't
want to have to describe that. The album follows the travels around a
modern urban landscape, and has a vague story attached to the lp notes,
and the whole piece has more of feeling of having been recorded as a
complete piece.

Subsequent to this, there is an EP of remixes from 'Haunted Dancehall'
which includes a brilliant Nightmares on Wax version of 'Bubble and
Slide', and the first lp from the follow on project from Weatherall,
'Two Lone Swordsman', which continues the pattern from the final Sabres
releases......

Sorry to go on ! Please anybody correct any inaccuracies that I've made
as it's dead early in the morning here and I'm not quite awake !
