Musn't forget Vinylmania on Carmine in the West Village and even Satellite on Bowery, which although primarily a techno store has a bit of stuff and freely accessible tables. Throb's, the place to go, though (IMHO), especially since they set up a great rack for CDs lately and also have freely accessible tables.

You can try Eightball Records on east ninth street, Throb Records on east
14th street, Mondo Kims on St. Marks place, Other Music on Great Jones st.,
or if you're really desparate try the (shudder) Virgin Megastore in Midtown
9they actually have a decent selection and reasonable prices. (However I
feel that giving your business to a smaller store is ethically better.)
