The original version is from the U.S. children's TV program, "Schoolhouse
Rock" - it wasn't really a program, but it consisted of brief
musical cartoons with an educational twist (dealing with mathematics,
history, government, grammar, etc) that the network (ABC) would show in
between cartoons on Saturday mornings. They were popular in the 1970s (and
many American listees grew up on this), and were brought back in the past
couple of years due to the recent "generation X" nostalgia trend. "The
Magic Number" was one of those shorts, which obviously dealt with
mathematics.

BTW, De La Soul sampled it and made a track ("3 Is The Magic Number") on
their debut album, "3 Ft. High and Rising."
