The following are the liner notes from Coldcut's "More beats + pieces":

********************************************************************************************

Ten years on what time is it? DJs need toys. Let us play

The daddies of sonic stupidity pressed up platters of souped up beats &
pieces and distributed them amongst the most delinquent sound terrorists,
to wreak havoc inter-pretation in their own styles. the beats & pieces
series continues to explore the turf that lies between turntable knights
of the analogue age and the ticktocknology of digital manipulation...

More beats & pieces is a thread commenting on the current states of DJ
and remixing techniques. Coldcut reasoning that the best interface for a
DJ could still be direct vinyl manipulation, the starting point for all
mixes was a custom Coldcut 12" of which 30 copies only were produced.
The 12" contained a broad selection of beat matched loops and samples
(like having a custom brakebeat LP), including drum loops evolved from
the Led Zeppelin brake used by Coldcut 10 years ago on their original
'Beats and Pieces'.

The mixes contrast different takes on analog (classic
vinyl/scratching/x-fade mixing/linear editing) vs. digital (multitrack
harddisk recording/on screen non linear editing/sequencing/fx).

OK. If Coldcut are truly committed to "saving the vinyl" and the art of
DJing as a whole (which I think they are), why not allow the average Joe
DJ access to those loops. If Kid Koala hadn't come up to Coldcut and
introduced himself, he might have not been discovered. As it is we are a
dying breed in the sea of modernity, CDs, and hyper-marketed/formulaic
music. Coldcut have continued to push the envelope when it comes to
music, and I think a logical progression (not LTJ) would be to give more
people access to such records and see what many bedroom DJs can do with
it.

Come on ninjas, release those custom 12" for all of us to play with.
Also, how about re-releasing the original "Beats and Pieces" and "Say
Kids" and all those classics. There are a lot of us out here who do it
for the love of the music only. As it is, it's a really expensive
hobbie/habit -- one I woulnd't trade for the world!

Just a thought...or two.

Peace,

Pedro Cevallos
