Hi Pengo,

Acid Jazz is a genre that applies to an extreeeemeeely broad range of
musical styles. Each outfit sounds different from the others. Plus, the
mixes are even more so different from each other. In fact, you will come
across bands with are more inclined on the funk, some are involved with
the heavy use of traditional jazz instruments, whereas other are more on
the hip hop side. Check out the sounds of these bands: UFO, Brooklyn Funk
Essentials, Groove Collective, Brand New Heavies (earlier stuff), James
Taylor Quartet, they are all so different from each other, in terms of
sounds.
In view of this, I think, perhaps, both the stuff you heard on mix tapes
and in parties could be referred to as Acid Jazz.
