lately a rapper asked me how much it would cost to recreate my crummy
studio. after telling him I said" if you had a sampler today what
would you saple. Like most people on the lyrical end of a certain
age all he had was tapes of hip-and r&b of recent vintage.
So where you gonna the beats ? You gonna do the Puff daddy thing?

Seriously,When i finally got my used Eps i too realized that I was
"funk deficient" aside from open breaks on my favorite tunes.
Luckily Ihad some strategies to rectify this long term A)
buy used records with an eye to sampling b)
steal whats open from my faves c)
buy comps wherever possible even dodgy mono Bootlegs
short term i did avariation of c
1) i bought the first 2 vols of Scarface(Rapper Paris's label dist
then by Priority) Classic Breaks and Beats. These drum only Cd had
most of the the basics including the soul ii soul break, " looking
out the front door" by"Main Source and others(ironically they were open
on the records) including the 4 beats that most jungle tunes are made
of. Downside: at the time they were cd -only for producers, since then,
they have vinyl copies; also they have no documentation so when someone
who know his stuff says 'substitution" you go whaaaa?? Unless you bone
up later. 2) Ultimate Breaks and
Beats (Ubb)- this 25 record vinyl set has all the whole tunes. True
most were only good for the drums and theyre on CBB but theres organ
stuff like the Champ( step into a world- by Krs 1) and the horns from
PeEs Show em whatcha got. cost 175.00 Downside: well you see the
problem Me I did both sort of. I bought cBB then I got choice vols of
Ubb the overlap in drums is deliberate and pretty thorough.
Exception the bongoes to" Apache " as used by Grandmaster Flash on"
the wheels of steel" -which if you know, it you got it anyway.
