Hey man, you were there? We could have turned it into an L.A. list meet!
I was there, along with fellow listmembers Gen Kanai and Tony Reid, aka DJ
T-Bird. It was a cool night
and a pretty happening scene. The $15 cover is a bit much, but I guess you
can justify it by having the whos-who of the worldwide electronica DJ scene
represent everyweek (although the Hollywood Athletic Club charges $15 for
all events during the week). Thank God for guest lists. :)

There's two rooms at Frequency; one "ballroom" with the monster sound
system and another one in the downstairs pool hall, where UFO and Thievery
Corporation were. I thought UFO's set was cool, they had great visuals
(that spy film with them running around Hong Kong). Strange, though, when
they DJ, it's usually one manning the decks, with another member leaning
over his shoulder and tweaking the mixer constantly. I wanna know where UFO
buys their clothes; they dress kinda sharp!

BTW, I wonder, with UFO being two Japanese and one frenchman, what language
do they speak to each other? I mean, when they're in the studio making
tracks, what language do they use (aside from music, of course :))? I've
seen Raphael Sebbag in an interview once (I believe it was the Red Hot &
cool TV special on PBS), and he spoke in French.

Thievery Corporation did a toasting-to-a-DAT show. I wasn't that impressed
personally. It was my first time hearing their music and I just heard a
bunch of straightforward beats with ambient synth pads, and that was
it...Forgive me if I've irked the TC fans on the list; perhaps I had such
high expectations since I've seen you folks give them props on the list. Of
course, my friends DJs T-Bird and Junior Roach were more impressed by them.

The ballroom, which was considerably more packed. There was more
rave/Chemical Bros material there (Was it surprising that I saw half a
dozen people in there wear Chemical Bros t-shirts?). It was cool overall,
but the whole night I was in a total drum-n-bass mood. So maybe I was just
restless.

But if you live here in town or just visiting, I do recommend Frequency -
in the coming weeks they have
people like Lionrock and Talvin Singh lined up. Perhaps us loco local
listmembers can organize a formal meet there sometime.
