RE: CD prices

Here in Canada the prices seem high to us. Bottom line is the value=20
of our dollar (and cost of living) is to blame, its low, which means=20
if any of you people from USA or the UK and even Europe come here you=20
will benefit from the dollar difference. Likewise if I travel there,=20
I will pay through the nose. In general Jazz is hard to find at good=20
prices, especially new releases, but I really look for deals, cause=20
jazz and music is timeless.

I have a good friend at work who collects acid jazz and is good enough=20
to lend me CD's which I play on my multi media laptop. Lets face it,=20
were into a expensive hobby. Oh, I also get some good CD's and tapes=20
from the public library. Eventually the prices will come down, and=20
you have to look to other forms of music, such as those great used=20
analog albums like Mezaforte's older stuff, tapes and underground=20
music. Hey how about CDR's, has anybody tried these.

I purchased a Yellow Jackets tape at Wal-Mart tonight for $2.88,=20
that's great. Took out some Methany CD's from the library along with=20
some great tapes by Stanley Jordan and Bill Bruford, for three whole=20
weeks. I think now I'll go out and buy some Incognito for 15 to 20=20
bucks including tax. It all weighs out one way or the other. The=20
more current the material the costlier it gets.

I know in Europe in general, CD prices are expensive. I did some=20
traveling
there two years ago.
The average *non-sale* price of a CD in the US is about $15. In the=20
UK, it
was about =A315! (about $24);
In France (Paris specifically), about 135 Francs or more ($23+). In=20
the
Netherlands, 42 Guilders ($21+) gets you a CD. I don't know whether=20
it's
manufacturing cost, overhead or VAT, but I've learned that for=20
example
buying a UK-made album via import costs just as much as buying it=20
there,
perhaps even less! I got Jamiroquai's "Travelling Without Moving" via
import back in October '96 for $27, which came out to =A316 or so.
