There's a pretty good article called "The Funkification of Rio" by George
Yudice in a book called _Microphone Fiends_ (edited by Tricia Rose and
Andrew Ross), if you want some more info on funk in Rio. Mostly focuses on
the social context of the music.

It's also interesting that the LA Times article briefly mentioned capoeira
- there's a hip hop crew in Sydney called MetaBass 'n' Breath (who just
released a wicked ceedee by the way) that includes someone who does
capoeira dancing, and emphasises its similarities with breaking. I love
the way hip hop and local cultures come together in all these different
ways all over the world...
