the perfect example of that is gangstarr's "words i manifest". the main
riff
is from "night in tunisia" a classic be-bop tune...

like the other replies stated, it's all usable. if you have the tribe "jam
ep" one of the tunes ("same old thing" i think) uses a mahavishnu orchestra
loop. mahavishnu was one of the most off-kilter fusion bands of the 70s. a
lot of their stuff was in weird time signatures, had odd harmonies, and was
*real* technique oriented--all the reasons *not* to sample someone!

also, w/those blue note comps (and many other rare groove comps), it seems
they base those on tunes that have been sample cleared. if the comps sell,
then they release the original albums. one label that i've always been
shocked hasn't taken advantage of this trend is sony/columbia. in the 70s
they almost *owned* fusion--mahavishnu, tony williams lifetime, return to
forever, herbie hancock, weather report, and miles were all on columbia in
the 70s...

stepping onto my soapbox...

it's the 90s now, almost the millenium, and hiphop has been around for 20
years, right? isn't it time for us to move beyond grabbing a loop, and
sticking a beat behind it? let's get more adventurous and build things as
composites (i.e. bass, drums, keys/guitar/horns/whatever as separate
elements
like "real" music). if shadow can splice together a guitar solo, let's take
the ball and run w/it!! at the least, let start chopping our beats/breaks
up
occasionally to make it more interesting...

okay, i'm stepping off now...
