Dear List:
lately i have a tirck i would like to share with those who have
samplers. I listen to an Oldies station (top 40 not classic rock) on
Fm stereo and started to notice stereo effects in songs that I know were
done in mono . When i called the station and asked why he says that they
buy the songs from a place in houston Tx that sells instant libraries to
station of this kind. Evidently the swervice gets the master and to
heighten the Fm stero effect puts at lest something on the left that is
not present on the right and vice versa. this leads to some really weird
stuff, example: the Swinging Medallions S " Double Shot of my Babys
Love" has all the vocals on one side , music on the other. In a lot of
cases horn and strings are placed drumless on one side while a full mix
is on the other. I have begun taping off the air and going home and
grabbing bits of these songs you cannot get off the vinyl versions thus
adding to my store of horns ,keyboard and sometimes vocal samples ( hey
tou never know when youll ned to remix " Double shot...." inna jungle
stylee). the trick is to get the
right side into your mono sampler. For this you need a 4-track and a
modular tape deck with stere outs. Run the out into track 1 (left ) and
track 2 (right) of you tascam portastudio . Then playback while in track
mode( not remix which is stereo) and yo can turn off the left and keep
the right side. this is the only way to do it for the right side( balnce
dials wont work.)
bon appetit
