Dear list:
Two people who responded to my Portishead post said that the new single
shows a lack of growth. One respondent even has the new album and he
says its a lot like "Dummy"(!!!). All to
the good I say. Both of these
e-mailers like(d) Portishead so there is no anger here on either side (i
hope), But i dont always want groups to grow. If you have a fly sound
that is a fusion of influences that is your style sometimes its good
to hone down over two albums. I wouldve hated a "Drum bn bass" by
Portishead album. I like hearing that the new set is Dummy II. As far
as im concerned none of the imitators did the job of bitinthe style
well enough to be a threat. Portishead still owns the field.
When u2 went from "Joshua tree" to "Achtungbaby"that was a leap
that couldve meant disaster . thye more or less pulled it off but had
they failed they wouldve ruined their careers. I woulddnt wish that on
everyone.
