I see a definate connection between the 2 - its undeniable. when i think
of 'core' acid jazz i think of the early talkin loud/acid jazz stuff ....
showcased in the totally wired collections. the common thread was
basically toned down (read simpler) and often loop like repeated jazz
riffs over a 4/4 hip-hop type beat. whether vocals, no vocals or rap was
over it, the music was basically like that. so its very tough to say
where one ends and the other begins, and i think that has been a concesus
on this newsgroup from its conception (and the reason it stays
interesting/informative). acid jazz minus vocals and 4/4 emphasis equals
late 60's/70's jazz/funk equals prime sample material of loads of rap
equals sample base for loads of acid jazz/drum n bass/electonic beats/ect.
its a bit of a circle and one should be up on all to really appreciate the
interrelatedness of it all.

theres a discussion on rec.music.hip-hop that is trying to trace the roots
of jazz being sampled. check it out if interested.
