James,

Try getting/borrowing the CD "RED HOT + RIO". It's by Verve and the sleeve
notes can probably give you enough ideas on what you really want to know about
Brazilian music (bossanova, tropicalismo, samba, among others). Prominent
artists of the genre (Jobim, Getz, Nascimento, Gilberto, et al) are also
briefly introduced.

I suggest you go and buy the CD. Quite nice with all the remakes by
contemporary jazz/acid jazz/dub artists (Maxwell, Omar, Incognito, Crystal
Waters, Money Mark, EBTG, David Byrne, Mad Professor, Funk N' Lata, Stereolab,
etc). It also has a "sister" CD which includes the original versions of the
remakes (CD title: RED HOT BOSSANOVA). I'm sure these CDs are available at
better record bars in your place.

Hope this helps.

Mike

Hello

Clearly this isn't what any sane person would call 'acid jazz', but I'm hoping
there is someone out there who can help me with this one.

I recently bought a 1987 CD called 'Passarim' by a Brasilian singer/pianist
named Antonio Carlos Jobim. The first thing I noticed was that Mr Jobim seems
to have recorded prolifically over the years. Tower must have had fifty discs
by him (this being Tower, perhaps they were all the same).

Anyway, the second thing I noticed was that I really didn't like the CD the
first time I heard it. But on subsequent occassions I've actually rather
enjoyed it. In fact it's become something of a late-night favourite of mine.

My first question is: does anyone know anything about Antonio Carlos Jobim? (My
only further knowledge is that he played on Getz/Gilberto.)

Secondly, struggling to understand how this musician relates to the rest of the
music world, I find myself wondering about 'lounge music' and 'bossa nova' -
terms I'm really not qualified to use. Is there someone who can tie all these
things together for me - or even show me that they are completely unrelated?

Finally, has anyone ever heard of Tom Jobim?

I'd be most grateful for any insight.

Thanks in advance.

James
