AC Jobim was one of the godfathers of brazillian music. He helped popularize
the Samba, Bossa Nova, and Batucada sounds in N. America and Europe during
the late 50s and 60s.The must have CD/LP is the soundtrack for the 1959 film
"Black Orpheus". This was a brazilian film that won international acclaim at
the Cannes film festival at the time and was important in introducing the
music of Brazil to European and N. American audiences. If you're curious about
the connections between Samba, Bossa Nova, Batucada definitely peep this
soundtrack. I haven't seen the movie but a friend of mine told me it's as
good as the soundtrack. The music from that film is timeless - highly recommended
for anyone who digs souljazz, drum 'n' bass, house, techno, ambient, jazz or
any of the other music discussed on this list - definitely one of Jobim's
best works.
