sure. there's no doubting the quality of massive attack & portishead's
output, but their popularity probably has a lot to do with timing.

they both blew up pretty big around the same time as the mainstream uk rave
scene was fizzling out and opened up a genre for people wanting to listen to
"dance music" at home.

the music journos were throwing around terms like post-rave before someone
(muzik mag?) coined triphop.

this hasn't happened on such a scale in america as the rave scene never got
so big.
