I think the absence of live drums on mos def's album is apparent. I like to
use live drums especially in Acid Jazz and Hip-hop. There are a lot of
drummers out there that can hold it down!!! Kinda like John Henry vs. The
Machine (american folktale), but in the end John Henry won. Brother ? from
the roots, The drummer(s) for Roni Size's Breakbeat Era & Reprazent's live
shows, the drummer from Janet Jackson's (I know she isn't acid jazz, but her
drummer-Little John from Philly is the truth!) concert band, The
drummer/percussionist on the TV Saga "Roots", Sonny Emory from earth wind
and fire, MONDAY MICHIRU (check the liner notes, yall!) This is a partial
list of drummers I belive that can take it to the machine! I prefer live
drums just because I think it keeps the spirit in the music. I also like
mixing live drums just for the uncommon shift it tends to throw into the
crowd. But in the end when recording live drums to tracks, it will only
sound as good as the engineer and producer want it to sound. My Two cents!
Excellent points Steve & Aaron & Angedella I see what you ALL are saying! I
never though about it like that before!!
peace & understanding
Ralph
