It is with great shock and sadness that we must announce the news that
Haroon Shamsher died July 8, 1999 of a heart attack. Although he had been
ill for a week, his death was totally unexpected. Haroon and his younger
brother Farook formed the radical and pioneering sound system and band Joi.
Originally from Bengal and raised in London's East End, Haroon's musical
career started in the innovative Joi Bangla Sound System which grew out of
the Bangladesh youth movement. With Farook he progressed through DJ'ing to
writing and recording their own music, developing one of the most exciting
new musical styles of recent years. Earlier this year Joi signed a deal
with Real World Records. Critical reaction for their debut album "One And
One Is One" (distributed by Astralwerks in the US) has been outstanding and
Joi were set to achieve a wider international audience, for which they had
worked so hard. A ceremony took place on July 13 at Brick Lane Mosque and
later at North Sheen Cemetary in London. Watch the Joi website for a
tribute to this wonderful man and an exclusive Joi SoundSystem mix set
coming next week.
