Digital copy protection?

Hi all -

Today I went to an electronics store to check out DAT recorders. The
salesman showed me different models and explained that some of them can
override digital copy protection and some cannot.
This was the first I heard of this. But according to him, you can only make
a copy of a digital music file one generation. If you try to make a copy of
the copy, it doesnt let you, because of some protection????

Sounds bizarre to me, and somewhat ludicrous. Can anyone verify?
