Hello all. Last night i checked out Joi here in Philly at a the Khyber and
it turned out to be pretty rawkin! Joi is on Astralwerks and are from the UK
. They blend asian music with dance, and what is a bit different about them
is that a lot of their stuff is 4/4 housey stuff the C+C music factory crowd
can get into ;) , but alternating throughout is complex percussion, rolling
jungle basslines, chunky headnod beats, and trance. I know i heard "little
fluffy clouds" by Orb in there. Anyway, the fact that they moved fairly
quickly across genres (keeping the middle eastern vibe) got me liking the
more technoey sound i normally would have nothing to do with. Definitely
liked them much more in a live setting as opposed to the CD. The show was
mostly pre-recorded stuff off DATs which they mixed up with vinyl, sampling,
live tablas and guitar and the sound was great in the tiny space.

Got to hang with them after as well. We went around the corner to the Nile
for some belly dancing and hummus. The band playing there welcomed them, and
Joi joined in with singing and percussion. It was very cool to follow the
show up by seeing their traditional asian music form. The drummer sited
Prodigy instantly when i asked him what artists influenced him. Was
expecting Bally Sagoo or something. I guess it makes sense because it's
reflected in their sound...

Joi will be playing SOBs tonight for those in NY and Montreal on Saturday.
If you want to check out the sound and can manage to tolerate the annoying
drunken yelps from the girl who acts as host around the commercials, this is
a pretty dope set on Streetsound's freQ...
