I think DJing takes too much passion, time, effort, money and talent for
someone to fake it. You can hear how "trendy" someone is just by listening
to them mix.

I believe your friend(s) asked you to take up the turntables for other
reasons. I tell my friends that too. I cannot see where being trendy
coincides with the illusion of "hip". For a turntablist, it is another
form of instrumentation. There is a miseducation of djing much like the
mis-use of computers. From the standpoint of my career as a graphic
designer, I use the computer as a tool to express myself. I am no
turntablist but I know the turntable is an extension of their musical
expression as much as the computer is my vehicle for creation. So for all
those people who take up the post behind the "wheels of steel" for the
sake of being "dope', "hip" , or whatever, then it is wrong and they
won't last long once the novelty drops since music is not the priime
reason to do it. However, for the people who refuse to use the turntable
because they are worried about what people would think of him or her,
that is a sadder case. That in itself is ironic to the "cliche".
Do it 'cause for the love of music, which I know u do. Not how other
people see it or how others like the media categorises it. About your
friends, if they are telling you to do it cos' it's cool, then you are
hanging out with the wrong crowd.
