The Top Dog--label of the month:
Anticon
http://digital.cductive.com/label/?lid=10189&slid=1
Organic and out there, ambitious and cynical, masterful and
experimental, Anticon's experienced craftsmanship has captured the
hearts of critics and will soon enough possess the ear of every consumer
in tune with pure, original hip-hop music. The release of Hip-Hop
Music for the Advanced Listener introduced anyone who was listening
to Anticon's militia of MCs--Dose, the "James Joyce of hip-hop," the
Sebutones from Canada, Sole and Slug from the unlikely state of Maine
and the 1200 Hobos. Anticon's MCs are so anomalistic that when a DAT
machine broke during a show, they did the whole set acapella. In another
coup over the expected, Anticon recorded Deep Puddle Dynamics,
over the course of one week in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Sole, Dose, Slug,
Alias, Jel and Mayonnaise, the artistic core at the heart of Anticon,
had never met before. Anticon's rhetoric is militant--the key players
believe they are the saviors of hip-hop, or as Sole might say it "God
likes us more than he likes these other artists. We are the football
team that prays before the game better. Anticon will be taking victory
laps while these other cats are taking cold showers and contemplating
suicide."

Label of the Month:
Chez Music
http://digital.cductive.com/label/?lid=10211&slid=1
Since coming to New York City in 1995, French transplant Neil Aline has
founded the electronica/house radio show BPM (on NYU's radio station
89.1 FM), a bi-weekly house music party called Rendez-Vous and a
fledgling label bringing the popular "French" sound to the States. Aline
was in the right place at the right time, as the late 90s saw French
artists explode on the house music (and popular music) scene in a
powerful way. Cassius, Daft Punk, Stardust, Dmitry from Paris, and Sven
Love all made a major impact on dance music. Through Chez Music, Aline
intends to produce music and all of his various projects with one
fundamental philosophy--"no-nonsense, cutting-edge dance music, backed
by a positive vibe." Although the foundation of Chez Music is built on
the soulful Paris/NYC hybrid sound, new releases will be fully
international perspectives featuring producers from France, Germany, New
York and Baltimore.

Orange 9MM
http://digital.cductive.com/artist/?arid=4756

Crowned Glory--label of the month:
Kindercore
You'd think Kindercore had a thing for rhyming names, and maybe they do
since the label's name begins with the German word for "kids." Dressy
Bessy and Gritty Kitty, two of the above-mentioned bands with rhyming
names, along with Kincaid and Of Montreal, make up the core of this
indie rock label's roster. The label started, as many of the best indies
do, after friends Ryan Lewis and Dan Geller released a handful of 7"'s
featuring music from local bands. Coming out of Athens, GA, a city known
for its support of independent music, Kindercore was given an early
stamp of approval by R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe (Stipe even designed
the jacket for an early Kindercore single). In 1999, Kindercore earned
its first Top 10 college radio record with Minneapolis' Kitty Craft, the
first band the label signed that wasn't from Athens. Since looking
outside of their hometown proved so beneficial, Kindercore relocated to
Brooklyn, New York, where the label continues to support fragile
independent newbies, nurturing them into recording, performing artists.

Ten 15 Folsom, Legendary San Fran Nightclub, Faces Shut Down
Legendary San Francisco nightclub Ten 15 Folsom, like many other clubs
in the South Market district of San Francisco, has been served with an
intent to revoke its operating permit. Ten 15 Folsom is SoMa's largest
and most beloved club, serving as epicenter to San Francisco's
globally-recognized electronic music scene. Patrons and supporters of
the club have helped build a petition movement to save the club.
Already, a hearing scheduled for Aug. 23, 1999 has been postponed 60
days, giving the clubbers and activists in its favor some breathing
room.
