Let me second Leslie's recommendation of Freddie Hubbard's SKYDIVE, and his
other CTI LPs are also pretty cool. Some CTI stuff is a little syrupy for
me ... for example, the Bob James album 4 has the classic break in 'Take me
to the Mardi Gras', but the rest of the tune and album is kinda wack to
these ears (although it does have it moments ... Steve Gadd is one funky
drummer sometimes). Similar with the Joe Farrel album UPON THIS ROCK, and
with the George Benson soundtrack album GOOD KING BAD. Better to go for
Benson's earlier CTI stuff, like BEYOND THE BLUE HORIZON.

There's a live album of Freddie Hubbard/Stanley Turrentine that is great
for hearing how they stretched the 'CTI sound' out live (2 tunes, each of
about 18 mins), and it has some of the intensity that I find lacking on
    some of the studio productions.

LTJ Bukem wrote a short piece in the Chaser a few years back about CTI, and
listed his fave ten LPs. I'll try to remember to track that down and post
it up tomorrow, for another perspective.

    peace all,
    Kurt
