i think it is an african custom, actually. i've gone to some of african
band shows in my town and they do the same thing. the bands i've seen are
usually playing *soukous* which is a central african style, unlike the
afro-beat trip that femi and his dad are into (which is west african). at
first i thought the person w/the money was drunk and obnoxious, but the
performers didn't seem to mind (although i know it would bug the hell out of
me), so...
