the title is *domino theory*. this is a late (i.e. post-
jaco) record. very sequenced, heading toward zawinul-
syndicate-type stuff (i.e., world music influenced,
    synthy-jazz).

wow. i've *never* heard anyone refer to *sporting life*
as a classic... although i really like weather report,
    i have to disagree...

    > I'd say _Sweetnighter_ is the most interesting from an
acid-jazz POV. Great grooves, & not fuzaky at all. Any
of the first 3 albums (that one, s/t, & _I Sing the Body
Electric_), as well as the Japanese-only _Live in Tokyo_
2lp (from which 1/2 of _IStBE_ was culled) are excellent
albums-- but on a more "out" jazz tip. I've never been
as into _Mysterious Traveller_ & _Heavy Weather_, but
    that last one's most people's favorite.>

jason's pretty right on about *heavy weather* being the
most popular--they had a bonafide "hit" on that album
("birdland", yes the one that everyone covers--including
    manhattan transfer).

i'm a jaco pastorius fan (their most famous bassist/side-
man) so i tend to favor the stuff they did w/him,
although you should *definitely* check *sweetnighter*--
which is previous to jaco's involvement--it's really
    dope.

i'm kinda surprised that jason's not big on *mysterious
traveller*, i don't find it that far removed from
*sweetnighter*. also another album from that period
    worth checking is *tale spinnin'*.

anyway, jaco's first album was "black market" (alphonzo
johnson is on that album too, but you'd never know by
the credits). the title cut is pretty cool, as is
"barbary coast." if you pick up *mr. gone* (the album,
not the band) you might recognize atcq's loop for
"butter" when you hear "young & fine".

that should be enought to get you started...
