    Great thread! Good to see that my admittedly inflammatory remarks spawned
    some good discussion; I love this listserv for that.

    I think I was too hard on the whole "jazz flavour" thing. I should note
    that it's not ALL jazz sampling that I find obnoxious, and I certainly
    don't hold any purist grudge about anyone like Bukem going for some kind
    of hybrid work. Indeed, the purism of "real" jazz artists really grates
    against me; that's why I'm into this stuff in the first place. I guess I
    just find some applications of the "jazz flavour" appropriation thing more
    successful than others. Forgive me: I'm in rehab from two decades of
    Marsalis and his ilk going on about jazz as "America's Classical Music."
    Who wants to consign jazz to its grave in this way?

    BTW, thanks for the record suggestions; as soon as I work up some
    disposable income, I'm off to the record store. . .
