     This week's topic: http://www.napster.com

I'm down for it......my friend just showed it to me
the other day, and I'm ready to get that program going on my PC!!!
     - dj phear

As an artist (music maker) I say...let 'em have it. If someone wants
to download my music from the internet, God bless.
     - Virginia Wagner

I can understand why people going to school love it. They don't have any
money and they want to hear the music. They struggle through as starving
students and think about the time after they graduate and get a good job.
The problem is that most of us folks creating the music have been out of
school for a year, maybe ten, maybe twenty and still don't have any money.
I mean not enough to support ourselves with our particular skill.

Independents who do need the money to not only
continue providing them with the music they like enough to download and
listen to, but to pay their own electric bill and fill up their gas tanks
so they can come to the towns and play the music for them live.

Users of Napster fail to realize that the bands/artists who sell
multi-million copies of their records are few and far between.
     -Robin Pearl
      independent artist
debut record "Wisteria" released on Caleigho Records

My understanding of Napster is this: It's going to be liberating to the
artists, taking their music out of the hands of the large record companies
that have been screwing them over for so many years and restoring it to its
rightful place, in the hands of the artists themselves. The MP3 movement
will quite feasibly one day drive the record companies out of business and
then what? Well, the reason apparently not many artists are in a big huff
about all this (save Metallica and a few others for some reason, apparently
because they're not getting royalties) is because they don't get much money
from royalties themselves. Truly, only the really huge bands like Metallica
do see substanstial amounts of money because they sell so many albums. And
even with bands like Metallica, the most money they get from being an artist
is NOT from royalties; it's from concerts. Thus the artists' logic is, if
the music is out there and it's free, more people will listen. The more
people that listen, the more publicity they get. The more publicity, the
more people will go to their shows. So really, I think Napster is an
excellent idea and a liberating solution to musical artists' repression by
     corporate America.

I think all the shit the record companies are throwing over Napster is
ridiculous. Napster was made so that users could find RARE and HARD TO FIND
songs, which, for the most part, a lot of the users still use it for. I
spend most of my time finding UNRELEASED remixes. So if these songs are
unreleased (Actually, usually just unreleased in America, go figure) or
extremely hard to find how is anyone really losing money? And CD's still
cost about four times what it takes to make them so why should they be
complaining over a 300% profit? And besides SOMEone had to buy those songs
     before they ended up online....
     - DJ BoodhaBwoi

I personally use and love Napster.
I got hooked on it about 5 months ago in a work environment,
and I have used it ever since.

I read something online a couple of days ago that stated Dr. Dre told Napster
to pull his music from it by a certain date in May. I thought that was
    funky,
but then again, with me aspiring to produce music, I may feel the same way
about it. I doubt it, because I like what MP3s can do for you; get music to
people instantaneously, and if someone wants it on CD, vinyl or tape, they
    will
still buy that media, in addition to having it on PC MP3. Majority of the
    people
with MP3s are most likely listening to it only on a PC/MAC.

I like the fact that if you are new to the industry and want to get
    recognized,
that is probably the best way to do it, and least expensive way - share
    your stuff
on MP3. Millions of people can hear your stuff and then go and buy it if
    they want it.

And, it proves that people can work together and be giving when it comes
    to the
things they enjoy! Napster is all about sharing!

I think that napster is quite good.
In my country it takes so long to get the albums out here,
with napster, I can get a chance to hear them before the
album is released. It doesn't stop me from buying the album
when it 'eventually' gets released if anything, it makes me more
determined to buy, so I can hear the rest of the songs.
I also have friends who respect my opinion, and if I say that
they (the artist) sounds good, they too, will buy the album.
     -Libbie
