To paraphrase The Duke himself, "there's two kinds of music - good and bad."
Soul is whatever gets you through the night. Too many boundaries and too much talk.

what is up with this black/white dichotomy bs again?! obviously, i prefer
afro-inflected jazzed-out funked-up soul, but the idea that white music
where a minor key is a minor key means absolute darkness and sadness is
nothing but an insidious stereotype. some influences from my youthful
hardcore (garage? punk?) days (all dated now): fugazi, operation ivy,
scream, soulside,... reveal the truth to be otherwise. these people were
(still are?) concerned and involved with positive social change. there was
disregard for harmony and minor keys were used in abundance, but the spirit
of hope and unity absolutely pervaded their works. that's what soul is,
    isn't it?

here's my personal evil racial dichotomy:
metallica and dr. dre are both suing napster. go figure.

reflects the history and struggle of black Americans: It's dark, it's sad,
    BUT
there's hope...whether expressed in the lyrics, in the harmonics, in the
    rhythm
or just the general essence of the music...that's what soul is, isn't it?
Channelng your pain into power and hope.

As opposed to minor-keyed European music and other forms of white music
    (goth,
grunge, punk, metal, etc) where minor key is minor key is minor key, and
    there's
nothing but absolute darkness and sadness.
