Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #22: Making money with music

    Newsflash 05.05.2000

    Dear Friends,

The weekend was twice as nice as planned. First of all, we had the Ninja
Tune posse in town (in two days the Herbaliser played both live and as djs,
and blew our minds completly along with their pals, Darren Knott (DJ DK),
Up Bustle and Out Sound System and the incredible Hextatic visual
treatment) invited by the Cinetrip <http://www.cinetrip.net> guys. On the
sunny Saturday between the two gigs Keyser took these vinyl junkies record
hunting. We also had the pleasure to hang out with two wonderful persons
from Vienna: Flow (one of the guys behind Enduro and the twentysomething
tunes label <http://www.twentysomething.at/e_start.html>) and Amanda (his
girlfriend who paints all the beautiful record covers for them). Wish all
    weekends were like this one!

In the radioshow dj Bodoo was our guest again with Ambrus Tövishazi (the
brain of the unclassifiable Hungarian band Amorf Ördögök and remixer under
the name of Tristram Shandy Ur).

This week's reading is some words from a great jazz musician about the
relation of soulful music and big money:

"Music is always a reflection of what is happening in society at a given
point. Since direction is lacking in the whole, it can't exist in music
either. And since music is more abstract than the written word, it cannot
lay down any direction either. The written word would have to take on the
role of leader, literature could be the better spearhead, the better
thinker of things to come. But that's not happening either at the moment.
However I am confident that something is happening right now. For example,
the actual number of people nowadays in Germany who feel attracted to music
is something that never happened before. The fact that young people are
saying they would like to be musicians even though they might have a far
better future as computer technicians or at least earn a lot more money.
And that in itself is a paradox in our age, in which no-one can count on
    ever making money with music."

excerpt from "Jazz is experiencing a Renaissance in Germany - Peter
Herbolzheimer, winner of the 1998 Frankfurt Music Prize: an interview"
    <http://www.gema.de/eng/public/n157/p_herbolzheimer.html>

Keep on spinning till next week!
