Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #63: Creative Destruction

    Newsflash 01.08.2001

    Dear friends,

Gorilla biz is just keep rolling even in the tropical heat: the last weeks' newsletter pause
didn't mean that we were on holiday but the opposite. We have spent a few evenings sweating in
Shuriken's home studio to make two remixes for the German Crippled Dick Hot Wax! label -
respect! - (http://www.crippled.com). Worth or not, you can check them very soon in our radio
    show.

You can listen to some exclusive stuff this week as well: in the mix there are two tracks of
the band called Mindig Ma's ("Always different"). The eight members of the band - one of them
is our regular guest in our radio show, dj Bodoo - are from Pecs, south of Hungary; the
influences of their music are trip hop, Red Snapper and Björk a. o.

This week's reading seems to be some "already-usual-k&s-style-vinyl-fetishist" stuff, but if
you take your time to read the whole site through you'll can't stop smiling. We got the URL on
a list from Mark Turner (www.jazzadelica.com), we hope he doesn't mind that we recycle it:

"Okay, so we're smack in the middle of the digital age. To put that into perspective, please
remember that as one generation realizes it is aging because one of their icons, Kurt Cobain,
died without knowing what an MP3 player is, another generation can mark its' age by the
realization that John Lennon died without ever having seen a compact disc. [...]

However, we are here to talk about the thing that's missing with CDs. And not that
imperceptible bit of room sound that a bunch of record-nerds who should have left their parents
basement years ago keep harping on. Of course not. What's missing from CDs is album art. [...]"

From the site "When LPs Roamed the Earth": http://whenlpsroamedtheearth.com

Apropos, digital age: I (Tibor aka Keyser) have just started writing my graduate study on law
about "Copyright and music in the digital age". Unfortunately there are not much really useful
stuff on the internet about this topic (but loads of trash), the best - and most radical -
study (The Creative Destruction of Copyright: Napster and the New Economics of Digital
Technology) I have found you can download here:
    http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=266964.

Label heads, producers, musicians, music lovers, please read it (and other papers in the
section) if you have some time and if you have comments please send them to us! Also if you
have some other useful studies, please send an URL or the documents to our address. Thank you
    for your help in advance.

Keep on chilling till next week!
