    My two cents worth:

    Instinct = pretty cool leftfield electronic music, decent ambient...

    Instinct = Shadow

    Shadow = Cliff Notes on all things downtempo/acid jazz (which can be both
    good and bad)

    Shadow = ABSTRAKT WORKSHOP, vol. 1 & 2 = necessary listening for '95-'96

    Shadow = US debut of DJ Food with RECIPE FOR DISASTER = wonderful

    Shadow = US debut of other Ninjas like Funki Porcini, 9 Lazy 9, etc. = right
    on

    Shadow = Mr. Electric Triangle's KOSMOSIS OF THE HEART = great

    Shadow = DJ Cam's US debut with MAD BLUNTED JAZZ = UNDERGROUND VIBES - bonus
    concert disc included on US release = freakin' amazing

    Shadow = DJ Cam, Shantel, etc. on double 10" vinyl = cool

    Shadow (1997 or so) = distinctive brown cardboard CD packaging which I liked

    Shadow (now) = not so progressive as they used to be

    Shadow (now) = too much repackaging!

    Shadow (now) = no more brown cardboard!

    Shadow (now) = nothing exciting lately + controversy (ninja tune & K&D)

    And that's the math of it. I pretty much dismiss them now as a
    recycler/licensing label, but I, like Dirk et al have pointed out, never
    would've gotten the necessary education in the global scale of downtempo &
    "acid jazz" without their early releases. These latest controversies (the
    Ninja Tune thing AND the Kruder & Dorfmeister debacle from last year?) just
    tarnish their slowly fading reputation. My confidence in the label was lost
    a while ago, so I just don't care too much right now.

    I just wish I had more of those 10"s in the brown packaging. Those were
    cool.

    peace,
    Ha
