    'Jazz' ratings good, not great
Although the American public broadcaster PBS has improvised some impressive ratings with "Ken Burns' Jazz," the heavily promoted series is being outgunned by Burns' previous documentaries "The Civil War" and "Baseball."

Reuters reports that the first installment of the series Monday night enjoyed an audience of 5.6 million -- more than double the network's typical prime-time draw and higher than PBS's detailed critical analysis of the history of rock and roll, which aired a couple of years ago.

While "Jazz" managed to achieve a 4.1 rating, that's well behind Burns' "The Civil War," which earned a 9.0 rating, and 1994's "Baseball," which garnered a 5.1 rating.

PBS executives told Reuters that the lower ratings might reflect the fact that the broadcaster now faces more competition from new cable outlets.

In the context of regular network prime-time ratings, ratings for "Jazz" were modest. A repeat of an episode of NBC's "E.R." can earn a 19.7 rating and 30 million viewers.

The 10-part "Jazz" aired Monday through Wednesday this week and resumes Monday.
