Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #44: 'Your town is only a perfect town when there is a
    bath in it'

    Newsflash 19.01.2000

    Dear friends,

You might have thought we quit this ever changing world of music biz, but now we are
back with vengeance, er.... newsletter. Our university exams made it impossible for
us to inform you about the latest happenings in Budapest, but we now try to make up
for it with an extra phat newsletter and a downloadable mix on the Tilos site from
the beginning of this year with very special guest Paul Murphy in the mix (see the
playlist below). It is our extra issue for those of you diggin' the crates for
ueber-rare Eastern European jazz/funk/disco breaks and beats, since the last 40
minutes of the mix is Shuriken's selection of Hungarian goodies from the past. We are
outing secrets of our trade again (check the end of the playlist), so that the
    knowledge will spread!

Nu Phusion is last years' news, however we have to mention this splendid night at
Trafo (the center for modern culture in Budapest). The event was held on the 29th of
December as the first in a series that try to bring together acoustic music (and
musicians) with djs. The phat line-up of 4 underground djs (both of us included) and
eight open minded musicians from the world of jazz, ethno and contemporary
improvisative music attracted so many people that the rather huge venue was packed
completely (people were standing on the stairs, and a huge crowd formed on the outer
side of the doors as well listening to the concert). It was an unexpected success -
even though there were controversial opinions about the night -, and we would like to
thank everyone who came down that night showing interest. The next Nu Phusion night
    comes later this year.

Another event we enjoyed a lot was Cinetrip (http://www.cinetrip.hu) on the 1st of
January with the legendary Mr. Paul Murphy on the dex in the historical Rudas Turkish
bath. The Cinetrip night after New Years Eve is developing into a sort of tradition
for the Budapest underground. The perfect night to chill and rest after the big crash
outs. On this special night Shuriken played a 2 hours '70s disco set to match with
the positive vibe (it's not so often he plays only disco), while Keyser moved the
crowd with classic and new jazz, afro and latin tunes. Big up to Paul who was also
dropping by the Tilos studio the next night to spin 40 minutes in our radio shows.

Check out his new tune (Latin Jazz Room) by the end of the mix. We are among the few
lucky people who have a copy of this dancefloor stormer soon to be released on his
Afro Art label, so thanks again Paul!

We have just finished our new tune with Shabaak (the bass player on Shuriken's Psyked
Up Muzak (Compost) and Rhodes maestro on the K&S remix for Kispal es a Borz) for a
compilation (we'll let you know more when we know for sure that the track is really
making it there) and developed into a collective from K&S. So if you happen to find a
spaced out slo mo funk tune in your local record store called Solar Force by the
Crate Soul Brothers, you'll already know it's us from Budapest. We only have a
pre-master version yet, but those of you who have been promised to get a promo CD-R
with our productions will receive it soon.

This weeks' reading is copy-pasted from a nice site about different types of baths,
    including "hammams", the Turkish baths:

"As the lslamic faith spread, so did the hammam, which accounts for many still
standing in lran, Asia Minor, and across North Africa from Egypt to Morocco. Before
the Arabs were repelled by rebellious subjects, there were hammams in Moorish Spain
and high up the Danube River. Conquered temples, churches and baths were often
converted into hammams - as the Islamic religion itself accomodated Jews and
    Christians, the hammam was flexible.

Like the Roman baths, the hammam became a place to socialize. "Your town is only a
perfect town when there is a bath in it," said Abu Sir, an early Arab historian. To
promote the local hammam, entrance fees were so low everyone could enjoy them. "I
leave it to the bather," said a caliph in A Thousand and One Nights, "to pay
according to his rank." ln an effort to keep tellaks honest, they were given the
    privilege of being tax exempt."

    (taken from http://www.cyberbohemia.com/Pages/Islahammam.htm)

Those who already has been here could tell you a few fables about these baths. We
hope one day all of you can have a bath here as well!
