    keith,
i have heard that hip hop is a culture. MC's, DJ's, b-boys, and
artists who make up this culture. sometimes someone from this group is
so good that they end up being comercially seccessful. the old school
rappers are/where so good because they where the best of the best. the
equipment was crude and you only did it for the art or for local pride.
money wasn't that involved. once whitey saw that hip hop wasn't a fad
they started "investing" in promising young talent, or already
    established talent. enter rap...

-ya ever notice how someone blows up and even the people in their
native city have never heard of them-thats rap
-someone w/ talent puts on one of their boys they grew up w/ despite
the fact that they suck(also known as the bro-up)-thats rap
-a young kid w/ little or no skill, who doesn't even write their own
rhymes, is marketed to a preteen audience-thats rap

this is just my take on it. take it w/ a grain of salt.
