    Hi,

a small review of the first Drum Rhythm night over here in Amsterdam..

location was nice, a small island near the back of the central station, only
approachable by taking the free ferry...smooth ride...there were no long
queues, went all fairly smooth....it was packed, but nicely crowded....you
could easily grab a beer and move in and out of the tents....there were 4
    circus-tents where the performances were.....

a pity the friday-festival started relatively early, Mark de Clive-Lowe
started at 19.30, and with the audience a more mature audience with lots of
working people most people arrived about 20.30 (first had to take in some
food after work of course ;)

..this meant we missed Mark dCL, a pity.....also we did ony see the end of
P'taah's performance, which came over very powerfull with a female
bass-player with a beautifull voice, a percussionist and a very tight
drummer.......didn;t know where the keys came from, but i heard them
    definately...DAT? ;)

next stop was Sarna and Josz, 2 dutch DJ's...nice records, westlondon
brokenbeat stuff....moving further to catch a glimpse of Da Lata...i really
don't know, i like to listen to their music at home, but i checked them
twice live now, it just doesn't come across...it's more listening music than
something to play live for a big audience.....good solid musicians, good
performance, but didn't do anything for me in this setting....went back to
check out the 2 dutch DJ's who finished their set with Native Force's
Musicbox, nice ending....then Phil Asher came on....he did a very nice
set...some soulfull garage/house, plenty of brokenbeats, starting deep, more
pumping at the end....sometimes playing a little too much with the pioneer
mixers' effects-unit....nice and tight..at the end it became a little more
abstract....bjork like trax on beats..not my thing, so we moved on to check
out Basement Jaxx live show....4 weeks ago i did check their DJ performance
out in Paradiso, not that interesting....this was their live performance...

i really like their first bunch of 12"es, but their album was not my thing
(except a few tracks, most notably Red Alert, i like my old disco samples ;)
but their live-show is someting else! lot's of dancers, singers and even a
live flamengo guitar playing part by one of the 2 jaxxes...very nice visuals
projected, good lightshow.performance was solid and their dancers and
singers really made a good atmosphere..heard some of the new tracks, like
Romeo, and one track that was almost a rip-off of Armand's Kootchy...unlike
Da Lata this was the other way around, don't like their latest producions
that much, but the live performance was very entertaining to watch....and
they really know how to program some amazing deep gritty bass-sounds ;)

after that we went to see Red Snapper, which was a little bit of an
anticlimax after the energetic show of BJ.....good musicians though,
especially the drummer was some kind of Clyde Stubbenfield the second ;) an
MC came on stage, added very nicely...nice dark smooth voice, and not the
ordinary hiphop shout outs ,but really adding something to the trax....

moved further, went to see Plump DJ's, not my thing, no soul, LOUD bass,
    HARD FAST breaks....

ok, next stop will be Sonar festival in Barcelona next week, and the weekend
after that i will be DJ'ing in Geneva on an open-air musicfestival in the
    center of geneva....love music ;)

    peace, Olaf
