So....the computer problems I mentioned last week are still
complicating my life....as of Friday, much of my e-mail in-box had
disappeared, which meant that most of my mail from the past 18 months
is lost to the ether (it's a good thing I filter lots of it)........
If you were expecting a reply of some kind to a recent note, please
re-send it and I'll respond asap.....

Much new music this week....let's begin with two outstanding remix albums:

"Verve Remixed" - This will surely be one of the records of the year,
not only because of the choice of material, but for the exceptional
vision of the producers. Remixing classic tracks by Billie Holiday,
Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald and others could have been
a total disaster, but it's obvious that reverence for these artists
and their legacy resulted in new versions that are imaginative,
elegant and modern. My hat goes off to Rae & Christian, Mark De
Clive-Lowe, Dzihan & Kamien, MAW, MJ Cole and all the others who
should be proud of this classy piece of work.

We'll be giving away copies of "Verve Remixed" this week and next, to
stay tuned and listen for your chance to win.......

Klaus Doldinger: "Passport RMX Vol. 1" - Some of you may remember the
band Passport from the mid to late '70s. Saxophonist Klaus Doldinger
(and his ever-changing roster of musicians) was Germany's answer to
Weather Report and produced over 20 albums between 1971-2001. On
"RMX Vol. 1," twelve Doldinger compositions are given the re-rub by a
bevy of producers, some of which will be familiar (Fauna Flach, De
Phazz and the Truby Trio), but others (Roberto Di Giola, Soul
Society, Marsmobil, etc) will not. A fine tribute to one of Europe's
    jazz-funk pioneers.

    Some of the rest:

Fertile Ground: "Seasons Change" - The third album from Baltimore's
premier soul-jazz collective continues in the style of Gil
Scott-Heron and Jon Lucien. Political yet positive, Fertile Ground's
music is deep on many levels. Navasha Daya's exquisite vocals are a
perfect complement to the organic grooves laid down by the rest of
the group and the arrangements are sharp and clean. I'd love for a
big label to provide the exposure that this group deserves, but I'm
also afraid that a major corporation might mess with their purity and
    spoil the magic.....

Jack Costanzo: "Scorching The Skins" - The man they call "Mr. Bongo"
returns with his second album for Cubop and the selection is mas
caliente! Smokin' beats and breaks collide with smouldering vocals
for a potent, danceable mix. Mambo!

Nuspirit Helsinki - Deep house and dark downtempo from Finland that's
perfect for home or in the club. Another fine release from Chicago's
    Guidance Records.

Moby: "18" - Call it "Play" Vol. 2 - it's got more of those blues-y
vocals up against brooding minor-chord instrumentals performed on
piano and synths and Sinead O' Connor makes a guest appearance.
    Surprisingly evocative............

A reminder that if you'd like to submit music for consideration on
the program, please send it to:
