  • Next message: BRIAN: "[acid-jazz] GIG GUIDE for L.A., New York, Chicago, London for week of 12/27 (from Liquidator Graphics)"

    2002 TRENDS:

    * Several of our all time greats (Ray, Goodman and Brown (aka The Moments), Buddy Miles,
Lester Chambers, Philip Bailey, Etta James, Dells, Edwin Starr, Vince Montana, Harptones,
etc) made a spectacular return to the scene, with BRAND NEW CD's in 2002, proving once again
that we should NEVER GIVE UP ON OUR LEGENDS, even if PAYOLA DRIVEN MEDIA HAS.

    * Emerging artists such as Sonny Boy, Donnie, Slapbak, Rio Soul and others all came out with
fresh/new music that clearly demonstrates that Soul music didn't die in 1980, but just fell
into a coma and is just now waking up. Key factor: this music has serious 'intergenerational
appeal' and would easily be the top music being played on 'commercial radio' today if the
modern day payola maddness didn't exist. The record industry had better wake up also, because
these artists also aren't interested in becoming your slaves.

    * Jimi Hendrix doesn't make this list for the first time in memory, does that mean they are
    running out of material?

    * The Motown/Chess vaults aren't ever going to run out of fresh material.

    * Sony/Legacy needs to do a MUCH better job at marketing it's CTI, Philadelphia
International, Columbia and Epic back catalog to it's 'core audience'

    * We have decided to create a 'new genre' called BLACK AMERICAN STANDARDS (thanks Joe
Vincent). If your unclear what that means, just think about it for a moment and it will
    quickly come to you :)

    * PREDICTION: 2003 is going to be the year when Black music fans start IGNORING the dictates
of corrupt entities like AOL, BET, eMpTVy, Clear Channel, Yahoo, Cathy Hughes, BMA, etc and
start THINKING & LISTENING FOR THEMSELVES

Remember, all of these links work and will take you to various e-commerce sites where you can
    purchase the music.
In my opinion EVERYBODY should own a copy of each one of these CD's.
They are ALL worth the money :)

    * CTI - The Master Collection

    BEST NEW ARTIST 2002
    * Donnie

    MOST INNOVATIVE CD 2002: (tie):

    * Ray, Goodman and Brown (aka The Moments) - A Moment With Friends
Choosing to do a CD comprised completely of 'covers', was a bold move which these guys pulled
off with class and distinction, proving once again that they are pacesetters. Look for
others to begin mining the great songbook of 'Black American Music Standards' with similar
    treatments

    * Buddy Miles - Blues Berries
Buddy Miles in giving us a history filled 'spoken word' intro to each song on the CD, not
only reaches back to the 'ancient African oral traditions', but he also proves that he's got
quite a bit to say about the history of our music that we need to know. Maybe it's about
time we started paying attention to what this brotha has to say?

    BEST SONGS

    1. James Brown - Killing Is Out, School Is In
(Funk, Rap, Edutainment' from the mind of the GODFATHA)

    2. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - Fork In The Road (live)
    (Monster Slow Jam)

    3. Marvin Tate - Neighborhood
    (Funk with a 2002 message)

    4. Sheps - Wind
    (Doo Wop Extraordinaire)

5 Shirley Marshall - How Could This Be
(Quiet Storm, Erotica, Whitney Houston without the baggage)

    HONORABLE MENTION

Whitfield Brothers - In The Raw (Funk, Jazz), Lisa Gay and Thrill - Watch What Happens (Jazz,
Soul, Standards), Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell - Duets, Will Wheaton - Consenting Adultz,
Mandrill - Peace and Love, Eloise Laws - The Key, Diana Ross and the Supremes - Anthology,
Ramsey Lewis - The Millennium Collection

    enjoy...
