Nice thread about the 80's ... for me 80's was all bout New York Hard Core
    - Judge, Killing Time, Youth Of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Murphy's Law, Bad
Brains Sick of it All - that was before groups like pearljam took away my
exclusive right to mosh - and about Biz, Beasties, DMC, LL, Roxanne Shante
    and Nu Shooz ...
Anyway I dont think NYHC is really something for discussion on this
list.... That was almost like a past life for me, something which slowly
faded with my discovery of Jazz music at the ripe old age of 15, at the
    onset of the 1990's ...

So that's what music in the 80's was for me BACK THEN (mind you i was a
    snot nosed teen )
In music in the 80's now, in retrospect, I see the following major and
    essential artists/genres:

    - Hip Hop - for hip hop 80's was the golden age... they only started
buffing trains in like 87... and from early 80's to late 80's you see 2
different generations, old school and new school. personally the late 80's
hip hop is by far the best time... with Native Tongues, Def Jam artists,
BDP, EPMD, Cold Chillin... definitely the finest.

    - Loft / Garage - Larry Levan, David Mancuso, and the post-disco dance
12"s that came out of that era... essential pre-electronica

    - * R * E * G * G * A * E * !!! that's one that we havent mentioned on the
list yet. But 80's was a fruitful decade for reggae, especially in the
category of early dancehall. IF you're looking for strictly roots & dub,
probably the 70's is the right decade. But in the 80's the tracks that are
early dancehall mixed with roots are the absolute killers!!
Tracks like Half Pint, Cocoa Tea, Michigan & Smiley, Frighty & Colonel
Mite, Tony Tuff, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Sister Nancy, Barrington
Levy, Pinchers, and early Shabba, Nardo, Supercat, Buju,
Capleton, Dirtsman.... this is the good good !

Now, regarding the GO GO thread...
my favorite joint is Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers' "Bustin Loose"
Also the trouble funk joints mentioned previously

    Honorable 80's mentions:
    Grace Jones ('my jamaican guy')
    Loose Ends
    the Police
    Peter Gabriel
    ESG

    peace

    Nat
