Funny you should mention, I was just goofing around last
night and played a big afrobeat set on my radio show for
black history month (that, and I really dig Fela). Some of
the drumming is pretty tough to match, mix, and get to
sound right, so the mixes were pretty quick and not too
drawn out, but listening to the tape afterwards, it sounded
    pretty good (IMHO).

Mostly agreeing with T-Bird with a lot of things that were
said, but yeah, Fela might not be the best place to start
if you're mixing from a house set. Better off to start
with some artists which are coming from house using
afrobeat as their main melodic inspiration. I would think
dropping in one afrobeat tune could/would just about go
unnoticed, and if your audience is open-minded, they might
    actually dig a whole set.

As for suggestions, I've got a Dennis Ferrer 12" called
"Funu" which I absolutely love right now. Similarly, I
just discovered that the b-side to my Nick Holder "Summer
Daze 99" 12" has a pretty good afrobeat tune called "Slow
Motion". Also digging DJ Spinna's "Deep Rooted" (This guy
needs way more hype, everything he does is HOT!). Then of
course, there's Femi Kuti's "Shoki Shoki" and remixes, and
some Joe Claussell stuff that's got an afrobeat feel to it.
Also, the new Jerome Sydenham/Kerri Chandler album
"Saturday" (Ibadan) has some awesome afrobeat stuff (not to
mention some nice garage/house tunes), especially on "Aro"
and "Koko". Tony Allen "Black Voices" (Comet), that might
    work as well.

    Hope this helps.
