STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello all

Representing Wellington, New Zealand we had a fine blend last week from the
Jewel School crew. Andy and Zen present their show on Saturday nights from
7-9pm (NZ time) on Radio Active, the same station that hosts Gilles
Peterson's Worldwide over there. Andy also works for record label Loop and
is in the process of setting up a new label called Antipodean with another
of the Stylin alumni, Mark de Clive-Lowe. You want links? ...

Making the musical links weekly is the Trainspotters' Corner segment, this
time looking at "Petaco 86" by Digi Onze, an obscure Spanish production from
the Novophonic label which somehow succeeds in blending latin, hip hop and
electro with cute video game noises. It's being brought to a wider audience
now thanks to an excellent compilation called Phonic Hoop, put together by
Robert Luis who runs both the Brighton (UK) club night of the same name and
the label Unfold (part of Tru Thoughts) which has released the comp. Anyway,
"Petaco 86" has a number of chopped up horn parts, one of which is
unmistakeably in the melody of "A Night in Tunisia", Dizzy Gillespie's cubop
jazz standard. I played a killer version by the late yodelling jazz singer
Leon Thomas, recorded in 1979 with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and released
on a small Italian label called Palcoscenico.

This week's trouble - it's just me in the studio, hoping to do a better job
of actually playing the things I say I'll play at the start of the show!

    until then
