Hi there. Its Matthew K from Interactive in Glasgow, Scotland here. Been
incredibly busy (as usual) at Firebird in Glasgow's West End with my usual
Tuesday night residency. Forthcoming dates include the Pyrotechics nights at
Club Alaska and the Bacardi Tent at the T in the Park Festival in
association with the Sub Club on Sun 14th July between 12 - 3pm.
Since my chart last week my website at http://www.interactivedj.co.uk
reached 20,000 hits. Compared to the big world of corporate websites 20,000
hits isn't anything special but for something that deals in such a specific
style of music and with no financial backing or sponsorship I think its
quite an achievement. I can't even remember when it first went online now
but it was very different to what exists now. Back then it was based around
a club I run at the now defunct 13th Note Cafe Bar in Glasgow city centre.
Trying to promote local talent and push new music, the sounds back then were
a lot more experimental although the jazzy element and funky grooves always
featured. It was only when the club faded away and I came up with the idea
of online guest DJ mixes that things really started to take shape. Since
then we have hosted exclusive mixes from the likes of Jimpster, Alex Attias,
DJ Morpheus, Fauna Flash, Minus 8, Mo Horizons, Amalgamation Of Soundz, etc.
We currently still have mixes online from Domu and Aardvark as well as my
good self and have many of the favourites in our archive section.
To celebrate this achievement the website is about to undergo its most
radical overhaul in eons. We are buying our own private webspace which will
result in better sound quality, less congesttion and more graphics. We will
also endevour to keep pushing the newest sounds around and keeping you up to
date the latest releases. Roll on 40,000 hits.
    Anyway, until next week.......

    Matthew K DJ Chart 4th June 2002

    1. Jazzanova: That Night - Remixes (JCR)
I always knew the remixes were going to be stunning, but this is outrageous.
Wah-Chu-Ku aka Tony from Attica Blues drops an epic 80's tinged remix of
monumental proportions while Victer Duplaix does a wonderous job on the
    flip. Truly awesome.

    2. Benny III, Kode 9 & Culprit: Fat Larry's Skank (Tempa)
The Tempa label blow us away with an amazing Indian style 2 step monster
with an eerie flute drifting over the top of this dancefloor killer. Watch
out for Kode 9 - a name for the future and be sure to check out the
forthcoming Tempa compilation - the perfect starting place for all those yet
    to hear their delights.

    3. Les Gammas: Outra Vida - Remixes (Compost)
Featuring the vocal talents of Smoke City's Nina Miranda, its another
Brazilian style gem. I'm going for the DJ Patlife remix where the drum 'n'
bass producer scores his best ever remix.

    4. Lava: Aile Algeria (Audiopharm)
Following on from the Moodorama remix 12", here is a double vinyl LP from
these Japanese wonders. A delightful album.

    5. The Electones: Summercloud (Inertia)
Other than the Hefner remix album, things have been very quiet at Inertia
for a long time. They're back though with a new outfit and a truly superb 3
track 12" with all the usual Inertia style jazziness.

    6. Organ Language: Volume 2 (Revirth)
Japan's Calm continues his Organ Language series with more Detroit style
grooves. For those who can't track down these Japanese release, the CD
compilation is due out over here in the next few weeks.

    7. Gotan Project: Triptico - Remix (Ya Basta!)
Now on vinyl, Peter Kruder does a superb job of transforming the Gotan
Project classic into a dancefloor winner while retaining all the elements of
    the original.

    8. Carla Alexander: Volume (Murena)
House music of the Brazilian variety recalling the works of Joyce but with
    some wicked dancefloor beats.

    9. Rhythmix: Reluque Batuque (Far Out)
Remix album time and with the likes of 4 Hero, Masters At work, Da Lata,
Zero DB and Bing Bang on offer, it makes for a quality package.

    10. Various: Suburban Soul (L5 Recordings)
Another Japanese release this time featuring 3 exclusive new tracks from the
far east and a rare gem from Off World aka Kirk Degiorgio. Very impressive.

    11. Peter Benisch: Sabines Song EP (Eevolute)
Way back in the early 90's Eevolute was my favourite label with the first
few releases still being classics today. Still on the case, this is one for
the Delsin / Music For Speakers fans.

    12. Sonar Lodge: Interior Backgrounds (Music For Speakers)
What a label this is. Spaced out beats with a heavy jazz influence, this is
where Miles was going in the mid 70's.

    13. Chris Bowden: Slightly Askew (Ninja Tunes)
The spirit of Sun Ra lives on with this astounding new album from Chris
Bowden. A true musician at work, this is a fully fledged jazz album with 4
tracks of stunning music over 2 slices of vinyl. STUNNING.

    14. Various: Metrosound Sampler (Metrosound)
Straight to the Tikiman exclusive 'The Sound' for a slice of classic dubbed
out grooves. Also check the Thomas Fehlmann track - nice.

    15. Murcof: Mortes (Leaf)
This may be a bit more leftfield than my normal sounds but what an album.
Classical pianos and strings mix with a lo-fi Basic Channel style groove.

    16. Akufen: Deck The House (Force Inc)
A Herbert production and one of the most twisted, out there things he has
done in eons. Unlike anything else around, Herbert really is a genius.

    17. Agent K: Feed The Cat (Laws Of Motion)
Kaidi Tatham is really starting to come through as the main man of the
moment. This album is future music of the highest degree and is as good as
the Modaji and Domu long players.

    18. Beady Belle: Ghosts / Lose & Win Remixes (Jazzland)
Thanks to Nik Weston for another killer release. 'Ghosts' has been a
favourite for a while but this new remix by Rune & Raymond adds an amazing
bassline and stretches it to 9 minutes. The more broken beat style remix of
'Lose & Win' is a stunner as well.

    19. Moonstar: Dupont Remixes (Compost)
Straight to the Nu Era remix of 'Workin Men's Hustle' where Marc Mack of 4
Hero drops a wonderous Detroit influences broken beat killer. A truly
amazing track from an all round excellent EP.

    20. A Bossa Electrica: Tombo in 7/4 (Raw Fusion)
Yet more Swedish wonders from this exceptional new label thats getting big
props from Cukipapa. Latin style but with a very modern twist, the title
track on this 3 track EP is the old classic that instantly brings a smile to
    your face. WICKED.

    21. Nicole Conte presents Rosalia De Souza: Mariab Moita (Schema)
Nik Weston is sure on the case just now and this is yet another beauty he
has sent me. All three tracks are incredibly funky Brazilian groovers with
the 'Canto De Ossanha' track being the current favourite in the package.

    22. Nude: Digitise (Shelflife)
Another release from the Ammunition crew (also home to the likes of Tempa),
this dubby 2 step release looks to the Detroit originators for an inspiring
release. With Zed Bias now on Sirkus and his collaborations with Kaidi
Tathan for Laws Of Motion, watch the 2 step and broken beat scenes hit off
each other for some stunning music.

    23. Lava: Vem Para Ficar (Audiopharm)
Well done for Audiopharm for picking up this Japanese delight. Straight to
the Moodorama remix for a stripped back, lush groover. LOVE THIS.

    24. Stereotyp: My Sound (G Stone)
Cheers to Cukipapa for sending me this. After the delights of his 12's,
Stereotyp drops 11 tracks of major dubby buisness. Loads of vocals,
drum'n'bass influences, 2 step sounds and a stunning production job results
    in a killer album.

    25. Stockhom Cyclo: Electronic Ghetto Twist (Raw Fusion)
Second release from this wicked new label. A bit nu jazz, a bit broken beat,
a bit Underground Resistance - this is where its at. Sure to be a winner
with the likes of Alex Attias, Dego and the likes.

    26. Various: Soul Searching II - Tribes Vol. 7 (Infracom)
Other than 'Verve Remixed' and 'Music & Movement' there haven't been many
killer compilations about. This one is and its loaded with treasures over 3
    slices of vinyl.

    27. Roomtone: Music Against People (Music For Speakers)
This label's output just gets better and better. Roomtone aka Jeroen Kimman
drops a much more jazz orientated release but with Sandor Caron and Aardvark
each producing a track the result is a beautiful hybrid of electronica and
    spiritual jazz.

    28. Various: Verve Remixed (Verve)
Finally out on vinyl, despite the fact that the official CD release has now
been put back. Every track a winner and with the likes of MJ Cole, King
Britt, Rae & Christian, Joe Claussell, etc at the helm its no surprise.
Makes for compilation of the year, so far.

    29. Cinematic Orchestra: Every Day (Ninja Tunes)
Again, now available on vinyl after nearly wearing out my CDr. Sublime album
with the Roots Manuva track being a current favourite.

    30. Masora: Game Is Over (ARQ Records)
Excellent UK r'n'b thats up there with the productions of Dodge aka Venus
Tribe. Bit of a mystery release but very sexy and exciting.

    31. Gigi: Gud Fella Remixes (Palm Pictures)
Nice to see the re-apperance of some cool new African rhytmns in recent
times. Here Restless Soul are on the mix for an afro house delight. Also
worth checking out the Tony Allen remix.

    32. Jazzanova: In Between (JCR / Compost)
Truly glorious and worth the wait. Jazzanova have moved on to give us an
album with jazz and soul gems with a variety of guests. This is what all
future music will sound like one day. You need this.

    33. Plej: Sampler CD 2000 (CDr)
These guys are going to be massive. Following the release of their mega rare
debut 12" (does anyone actually own a copy) they follow it up with a taster
of their future releases. These guys need to be signed.

    34. Nu Spirit Helsinki: Album Promo (CDr)
Only 100 in circulation and forthcoming on Guidance, this is already going
to be one of the years best albums and we are only in January. Watch out for
    it.

    35. Various: Afrotronic 2 Sampler (Audiopharm)
4 track sampler from the forthcoming album. I'm really feeling the extremely
deep Aaron Bingle mix of 'Voodoo Bliss' but the wonderous vocal on the
slightly Detroit sounding 'Higha Spirit'. The forthcoming album will also
feature Beatless, Minus 8 & Da Lata so it should be good.

    36. Sun Ra: Satellites Are Spinning - Zero DB & Hectic Mix (Mo Smog)
Only on CDr just now but this is blinding. The Zero DB boys do it again,
this time in collaboration with Hectic aka Gilles Peterson on his first
production job. The boy did well.

    37. Mr Scruff: Shrimp! (Ninja Tunes)
Long awaited taster from his forthcoming album, this is like a jazz funk
take on early 80's New York clubland. I'm going for the dub mix. This will
    be big.

    38. Relaxo Abstracto: Inflatable Scream (Music For Speakers)
A new project featuring the collaborative efforts of Aardvark, David Caron
and Sandor Caron. Working together they come up with 3 wicked, melodic,
Detroit style broken beat numbers that will appeal to those adventurous DJ's
    out there.

    39. Hippiehaus: Maurice Remixes (Jubilee)
Finally out on vinyl after its first appearance on the excellent 'Club
Culture For Urban Listening' compilation CD on Jubilee last year. 4 mixes on
offer, including one from label mates The Havana Boys. Delightful deep
    grooves.

    40. Recloose: Ain't Changin' (K7)
A sampler from his forthcoming album on K7, with a kind of old school feel
with a broken beat influence. Also has an outrageous Carl Craig mix on the
    flip.

    41. Quant: Funkster EP (Hollow)
Watch out for this guy. Formally signed to the now defunct Dot label, anyone
who got hold of the (now extremely rare) 'Quantastical Quantasm' album will
realise what a talent he is. Here we get 3 new tracks in the Herbie Hancock
    vein. Splendid.

    42. Seiji: Loose Lips (Bitasweet)
The Goya crew continue with the gems, with this Bugz in The Attic production
bringing the vocal talents of Lyric L to the fore. One of the most original
    things in a while.

    43. Sun Ra: Sunset On The Night Of The River Nile - Eddie & Dus Remix (Mo
    Smog)
Been looking out for this for a while, so cheers to Paolo at Mo Smog for
sorting me out. Broken beats, manic percussion and the genius of Sun Ra all
together. Its quite scary how well Sun Ra sounds in this modern context.
    Excellent.

    44. Baaba Maal: Jamma Jenngi / Fa Laay Fanaan (Palm Pictures)
This may have been out for ages now, but I only got it in the post the other
day. With a superb J Walk mix on one side and 2 Ashley Beedle mixes on the
other, it makes for a supreme package.

    45. Neon Phusion: Its Another EP (Laws Of Motion)
Bugz in the Attic are on a roll and the moment and here is another gem in
their catalogue with 3 excellent tracks. Their music is just getting better
    and better.

    46. Joseph Malik: Diverse (Compost)
Local lad drops a stunning long player for the genius Compost label. Reminds
of Terry Callier and Shuggie Otis, it shows that real songs and soul music
are back, but with modern production skills.

    47. John Beltram: Americano (Exceptional)
One of the most talented men in electronic music is back with his 4th album,
and shows him moving into even more jazzier territories. This is an
    astounding album.

    48. Various: Music & Movement Vol 1 (Climate)
Double CD of utterly stunning music, with countless Japanese nuggets finally
getting a release over here. Compiled by Nik Weston, this is the perfect
indicator of where music is just now. With an 8 track vinyl sampler with
most of the highlights included, this is comiplation of the year so far.

    49. Ras: Rhythmic Altered State (Best Seven)
Forthcoming on this Sonar Kollktiv offshoot, this CDr shows yet another
genius talent from the Jazzanova family.
