Lots of good stuff in the bag this time, especially in the hip-hop
and soul department:
Fave Of The Week #1: Shakeyface: "Puddle Jumping During A Monsoon" -
deep, loopy beats and plenty of found sound, sci-fi snippets and
jazz-dub echoes. This seven-track EP will have to hold us 'til next
year when the full-length hits.
Floetry have been writing songs for the likes of Jill Scott, The
Roots, Bilal, Michael Jackson and others. The duo of Marsha Ambrosius
and Natalie Stewart drop their debut disc, "Floetic" - funky, modern
R&B with classy production.......Terry Callier returns with "Speak
Your Peace" - another fine collection of positive soul with three
tracks produced by Marc Mac of 4 Hero.
Fave Of The Week #2: Cee-lo: "Cee-lo Green & His Perfect
Imperfections" - I totally missed the Goodie Mob when they were
around, so this was an unexpected surprise. Eclectic only begins to
describe the 21 tracks of musical madness contained within. Part
Cameo, part Prince, part Zappa - Cee-lo knocks one deep into left
field......and into the laps of Boom Bip and Doseone whose "Circle"
is practically psychedelic, but anchored by some very solid (and
rapid) freestyling.
Fave Of The Week #3: Clinic: "Walking With Thee" - This album haunted
me from the first few notes and I was hooked. I was reminded of the
post-punk bands that emerged during the late '70s-early '80s such as
Wire, (S.F.'s own) Tuxedomoon and others who integrated synthesizer
and guitars into dark, sinister hybrids. Now I want it live...
Also on deck is "Cardiology," the brilliant new album from Recloose,
South Asian bhajans given a modern twist by dj Cheb i Sabbah on
"Krishna Lila" and Afro-funk from "Shango" - a reissue of Peter
King's 1974 recording made in Lagos, Nigera.
All that and tickets to see Alexkid at 111 Minna this weekend, so if
you're local, don't forget to turn on your radio after the "Buffy" /
"24" season finales.....and speaking of TV, is it just me, or was
anyone else underwhelmed by the last episode of "The X-Files?"
Until next week, ciao for now!
David
