Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #92: Nocturnal operations

    Newsflash 19. September 2002

    Dear friends,

We are glad to let you know that our fellow Crate Soul Brother Erik Sumo's
first solo EP has finally found its right place at mighty GP's record box.
Please check out the latest Worldwide show if you've never heard before our
    friend's long time hidden gem
    (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio1_aod.shtml?gilles). And before we
forget, Ambrus' aka Erik Sumo's excellent downbeat tune (formerly known as
Do-It-Yourself Disco) is now finally released through Pulver records. Thanks
to label boss Robin for hitting us with the 12" when visiting Budapest a few
weeks ago. Our cd-rs were played so many times they melted.

Be fast and furious with downloading this week's mix, as it represents more
new sounds, new colours and new dimensions from afar and our very
neighbourhood. Starting the show with Lee'n'gum in a terrible state of
exhaustion, we were soon surprised to find that we enjoyed playing around
with the turntables. When you've got good music, you can go on for days,
    smiling.

We might have already played a couple of these tunes, but still can't get
enough of them. First up is a splendid little tune from Ljubljana's young
talent, Evok, but soon enough, friends from London (DJ Vadim and Space Apple
Quarktette) also bring nu noize! Besides Vadim's excellent new album, don't
forget to check the 2nd 12" released to support the upcoming dZihan & Kamien
album. The Couch boys' release party is in Vienna on the 28th of September.
Our favourite freaks and icons will be performing their new album with a 20
piece orchestra, featuring our favourite Hungarian hiphop dj, twisted
electronic jazz/nu skool breaks/hip hop producer dj Mango (aka Modul) on the
cuts. Another reason to visit the V town is Alan "Cukipapa" Brown's special
appearance at Soulsugar on the 29th. Check out Keyser's silly booty-dance
and my head-nod style on both events.

And before you ask, no, we still can't get enough of the Jon Kennedy album,
although the Tru Thoughts massive keeps bombing the world with excellent
albums (like Quantic's latest) since its release, not making a single
mistake with their choices. And it will take ages to get rid of fighting
hell-cat Wildflower's supawicked rhymes on breakneck Herbaliser beats, as it
keeps sneaking back into our dj-bags.

So many good tunes, so little time.

And now, it's time for me (Shuriken) to apologise: Sorry, folks, for being
gone so long. Sorry for not answering to e-mails and text messages. Sorry,
Keyser, for letting you do all the hardcore newsletter work. But I had my
reasons. Ever since I came back from London (and finishing the dissertation
+ moving home tons of books and records was a mission-close-to-impossible in
itself) I've been buried in renovating a tiny flat, sorting out family biz,
starting my new job and meeting old friends. This is the first week when I
have some time to come up to breath some fresh air, before diving back
again, deep into the sea of heavy water we call life. Guess where crate soul
pressure is coming from! It's good to be back home again.

Lately, there's been a lot of late nights. Sometimes I found myself working
as late (or early, depending on human ways of twisting concepts) as 11AM.
But Keyser is also used to late night missions, and not just the sometimes
tough job of making our weekly shows after long and demanding working days.
But when you've got the call, you don't know anything better than these
nights that never seem to end. Listen to the words of the legendary graf
writer, designer of legendary record sleeves of equally legendary - among
others - MoWax releases, Futura 2000:

"There is only so much time to devote to creativity, if the genius engine is
in effect, then time parameters can vary. Making work, while others sleep,
(literally) is artistic bliss. Not all nocturnal operations are a success,
but the DIN at this hour is soothing. Don't sleep on an idea, or me. BIG
    BROTHER IS WATCHING. "

Keep on working while others sleep!
